"It is mandatory in Islam for women to cover all parts of their body except the face, hands and feet," preached Sattar, who is a member of the same human rights committee Jalil chairs. "God has raised you to this status, you should become a role model for other women," he added, before going on to wonder: "What message will it send when the footage [of this meeting] is aired on TV?" India plans to switch to electric cars as a way to improve air quality

Image
Electric cars bask in the limelight at India's flagship auto show, where an ambitious plan to phase out polluting clunkers has manufacturers racing to lure millions of new drivers to their green vehicles. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government wants all new cars on India's roads to be electric by 2030 to combat smog that routinely eclipses dangerous levels in the nation of 1.25 billion. Some auto giants at the motor show in New Delhi have expressed reservations about the aggressive roll out when so little of India is equipped to charge electric cars and most drivers cannot afford the hefty price tags. But few are willing to risk a golden opportunity in the world's fifth-largest car market, where owning a four-wheeler is a status symbol. “We are a strong believer in electric, and with a leap of faith, we started investing even before the government announcement,” said Mahesh Babu, CEO of Mahindra Electric, currently the only company producing electric ve...

IHC orders 12-year-old Christian girl abducted for marriage returned to her parents

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday handed over the custody of a minor Christian girl, who was allegedly abducted and forced into a marriage by a Muslim man, back to her parents. According to a court order issued on Friday, the 12-year-old girl failed to convince the court that she had willingly converted to Islam in order to marry the man. Earlier, the girl's parents had approached a local court with a petition stating that their daughter had been abducted by the Muslim man. At the time, the lower court had ordered that the girl be sent to live in a Darul Aman while the accused, his father and the  nikahkhwan (marriage officiator) be arrested. The girl's family had then petitioned the IHC with a request that their daughter be returned to them. As a result of the petition, the girl was produced before the court on Thursday. Historic handshake between Korean leaders highlights Pyeongchang Olympics opening ceremony

Image
Kim Jong Un's sister and South Korean President Moon Jae-in's show of Korean solidarity wins hearts. The two Koreas marched together and South Korea's president shared a historic handshake with Kim Jong Un's sister as the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics opened in a spirit of intense rapprochement on Friday. At a glittering but sub-zero ceremony, South and North Korea brought the crowd to its feet as they entered behind the blue-and-white Korean unification flag. South Korean President Moon Jae-in shook the hand of a smiling Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as he entered the VIP seating section, and again as the Korean athletes marched. It cemented what has been a rapid improvement in Korean ties since North Korea — after months of fierce nuclear rhetoric and missile tests — agreed last month to attend its first Olympics in the South.

156 women attempted suicide by consuming 'Kala Pathar' in Dera Ghazi Khan last year

Easily available poison in the shape of Kala Pathar, a chemical used in hair dye, and wheat pill, an insecticide, has contributed to an alarming rise in suicide cases in Punjab's Dera Ghazi Khan district, especially among underprivileged women. Known by its chemical name of Paraphenylenediamine, Kala Pathar was used by as many as 156 women to attempt suicide last year in DG Khan, it emerged on Friday. Dr Ibrar Khosa, in charge of the intensive care unit at the teaching hospital of Ghazi Khan Medical College, said 52 women died in 2017 after they either consumed or were fed Kala Pathar. Besides, five women committed suicide by drinking Kala Pathar-infused water in January 2018 alone, he revealed. Cheaply available in markets, Kala Pathar is a tasteless chemical that loses its colour when mixed in water. It is increasingly being used in homicide cases as well. Women in tribal and rural areas often use the fatal substance to end their lives due to domestic frustration. Pat...

Telenor for Short Deduction of Taxes

Federal Board of Revenue, in its second notice sent to Telenor recently, has imposed a Rs. 20 million penalty for short deduction of withholding taxes from customers residing in FATA.                 This penalty is in addition to Rs. 267 million withholding taxes that     from customers based on operator’s earlier understanding with FBR and precedence of tax exclusion for people living in FATA. FBR, however, states that Telenor should have deducted taxes from FATA and should have submitted the same to the government. “We can confirm that Telenor didn’t collect taxes from FATA and we sent them a notice to explain the short-deduction”, said an FBR official in a senate standing committee meeting today. “Since the taxpayer could not justify the non-deduction of tax, therefore an order has been recently passed as per the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 creating a demand of Rs.287 million (including the default surcharge)”, said th...

The Galaxy S9 could be painfully expensive if these EU price leaks are real

A source familiar with the Galaxy S9’s pricing structure for the UK revealed a few days ago that the handset will cost £100 more than the Galaxy S8. The report suggested that the same 100-point increase will be reflected in the US, where the Galaxy S9 will cost $100 more than its predecessor. A new report from Europe seems to corroborate the price increase, claiming that Europeans will have to pay €100 more for the Galaxy S9. Dutch-language site TechTastic , which offered similar details in the past, learned from sources familiar with the matter that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will cost €899 and €999 in the Netherlands. If the report is accurate, then all other countries part of the Euro zone will get the same price for Samsung’s newest phones. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ were priced at €799 and €899, respectively, in the region when they were launched last spring. The same TechTastic says it can confirm preoroder and release dates for the region. Preorders will kick o...

Samsung and Roku Smart TVs Vulnerable to Hacking, Consumer Reports Finds

Image
Consumer Reports has found that millions of smart TVs can be controlled by hackers exploiting easy-to-find security flaws.  The problems affect Samsung televisions, along with models made by TCL and other brands that use the Roku TV smart-TV platform, as well as streaming devices such as the Roku Ultra. We found that a relatively unsophisticated hacker could change channels, play offensive content, or crank up the volume, which might be deeply unsettling to someone who didn’t understand what was happening. This could be done over the web, from thousands of miles away. (These vulnerabilities would not allow a hacker to spy on the user or steal information.) The findings were part of a broad privacy and security evaluation, led by Consumer Reports, of smart TVs from top brands that also included LG, Sony, and Vizio. The testing also found that all these TVs raised privacy concerns by collecting very detailed information on their users. Consumers can limit the data collectio...
